The cluster ‘cultural practices and learning through and in the arts’ investigates the concept of Kulturelle Bildung in international perspectives. Therefore, the broad definition of learning through and in the arts of the UNESCO will be applied. A special focus lies on the transfer effects of cultural and artistic practices and the link to social transformation processes as well as non-formal ways of education and creative processes fostering learning. The concept of learning through and in the arts will be applied to three thematic areas: Cultural participation, access to culture and social cohesion.
The cluster aims to discuss comparative perspectives on concepts and practices as well as make international perspectives accessible to a broader academic and non-academic audience.
Kulturelle Bildung is often translated to arts education which is a rather limiting understanding, mostly focusing on educational processes in schools. For that reason, the cluster uses the concept of learning through and in the arts.
The working language of the cluster is English.

- Publishing of joint articles in English and German

Das Cluster "cultural practices and learning through and in the arts" widmet sich Konzepten der Kulturellen Bildung aus internationalen Perspektiven. Als Bezugs- und Ausgangspunkt dient das Verständnis von Kultureller Bildung als "learning through and in the arts", wie die UNESCO es anwendet. Ein Fokus liegt auf Transferwirkungen kultureller und künstlerischer Bildungspraxis, auf den Zusammenhängen mit gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen sowie non-formalen Bildungskontexten.
Das Konzept von "Learning through and in the Arts" soll zunächst vor allem auf folgende drei Themenschwerpunkte angewendet werden: Kulturelle Partizipation, Zugang zu Kultur und gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt. Im Cluster sollen vergleichende Perspektiven diskutiert und internationale Perspektiven sichtbar werden, nicht nur in akademischen Kontexten.
Da die Übersetzung von "Kultureller Bildung" ins Englische mit "Arts Education" eine konzeptionelle Enge mit sich bringt, fiel die Entscheidung im Cluster für "Learning through and in the Arts". Die Arbeitssprache ist Englisch.
Für 2021 sind folgende Aktivitäten geplant:
- AG für Definitionen und Konzepte aus transkulturellen Perspektiven
- Kulturelle Bildung in Konfliktsituationen (Beispiel Westafrika)
- Veröffentlichung von Artikeln auf der Wissensplattform kubi-online auf Englisch und Deutsch
